In a deeply emotional night at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, Lionel Messi brought his extraordinary 21-year international career to a close.
The 2022 World Cup winner delivered a trademark performance, scoring a goal and providing two assists to lead Argentina to a 3-0 victory over Benin in his final appearance for La Albiceleste.
A masterclass from the maestro
Despite the emotions surrounding the friendly, billed in Argentina as "The Night That No One Wants to End", Messi remained the focal point of the attack.
Following a goalless first half, the 39-year-old sparked the game into life in the 48th minute, delivering a precise pass for Nicolas Otamendi to break the deadlock.
Just over 10 minutes later, Messi registered his 68th and final international assist, laying off a perfectly weighted pass for Nico Paz, who curled in a fine effort from the edge of the box to double the lead.
The crowning moment arrived in the 71st minute. After Agustin Giay was brought down inside the penalty area, Messi stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to score his 126th goal for Argentina.
A night of emotion and celebration
The match was paused in the 10th minute for a one-minute standing ovation, accompanied by fireworks and chants of "Ole, Ole, Ole, Messi, Messi" from the stands.
Following the final whistle, the referee handed Messi his match cards as a keepsake, while players from both teams lined up to embrace the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner.
During a tearful lap of honour, accompanied by a drone show illuminating the Buenos Aires sky, Messi addressed the crowd.
"I don't want to leave this place. I don't want to leave the field. I love all of you, and I will miss all of you. I am proud to be Argentinian," he said.
With back-to-back Copa America titles, a Finalissima trophy and a World Cup, Messi leaves the international stage as Argentina's most decorated player. His final 90 minutes against Benin ensured his legacy ended as it was built, with match-winning brilliance.
