Laryea Kingston says Ghana players must compete in 'top 10 leagues'

Former Ghana midfielder Laryea Kingston believes national team players must be competing in the world's top 10 leagues if the Black Stars are to rebuild their identity.

The Ghana Football Association is currently searching for a new permanent head coach following a series of disappointing results.

Amidst the managerial uncertainty, Kingston has outlined stringent selection criteria for any incoming technical team.

"A senior national team player should be playing for a top 10 league in the world," the 45-year-old said. "If not, he must be extraordinary."

Kingston's demand for elite-level experience comes as he enjoys significant success on the touchline himself.

Currently managing the Uganda Under-17 national team, Kingston recently guided the East African side to a historic qualification for the 2026 Fifa U-17 World Cup in Qatar.

Holding Uefa A and Caf B coaching licences, Kingston's tactical philosophy eliminated his native Ghana in the play-offs in Rabat earlier this year.
