The FKF Premier League promotion and relegation playoff second leg between Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United was abandoned on Tuesday after a controversial penalty decision triggered a pitch invasion and an assault on the match official.
The fixture at the Ulinzi Sports Complex was meant to decide the 18th and final slot for the 2026/27 Kenyan top flight. Instead, it was called off in the second half, with the outcome now in the hands of the Football Kenya Federation Disciplinary Committee.
Finely balanced tie
Kariobangi Sharks went into the game fighting to preserve their top-flight status after finishing 16th in the 2025/26 Premier League. They trailed after a 2-1 defeat to Mombasa United, who finished third in the National Super League, in the first leg at Mbaraki Sports Club on 1 October.
Mombasa United made a fast start in the return leg, with Christian Lubulu scoring in the sixth minute to extend their aggregate lead.
Sharks responded before the break. Patillah Omoto levelled in the 28th minute before Douglas Omanga struck on the stroke of half-time to give the hosts a 2-1 lead on the night and level the aggregate score at 3-3.
66th-minute flashpoint
The game turned in the second half after Mombasa United won an inswinging corner. Referee John Sulwe judged that Omoto had committed a foul inside the area and awarded a penalty.
The decision sparked angry protests from the Kariobangi Sharks players, who surrounded the official. The confrontation escalated quickly, with players making physical contact with the referee.
The tension spread to the stands, where a section of supporters breached the perimeter and invaded the pitch. In the ensuing chaos, the referee was assaulted and chased across the field.
Security stewards, supported by police and Kenya Defence Forces personnel stationed at the complex, formed a protective cordon to extract the match officials.

Awaiting disciplinary decision
With safety compromised and the penalty not taken, the match was formally abandoned. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation.
Focus now turns to the FKF Disciplinary Committee, which will determine the outcome of the tie. With video evidence circulating and a clear breach of security, the committee will decide whether the match is forfeited, replayed behind closed doors or settled through other sanctions, a verdict that will have major implications for both clubs in the 2026/27 season.
