Heart of Lions sack coach Kasim Gokyildiz as Ghana Premier League managerial exits reach four in eight games

Kasim Gokyildiz appointed Heart of Lions head coach for 2026-27 Ghana Premier League season

Heart of Lions have sacked head coach Kasim Gokyildiz following a run of three consecutive defeats.

The decision makes the 60-year-old Turkish tactician the fourth managerial casualty in just eight matchweeks of the 2026-27 Ghana Premier League season.

Gokyildiz departs Kpando with the club on eight points from a possible 24. In eight league matches, he recorded two wins, two draws and four defeats.

Appointed on 6 July 2026 on a one-year contract with an option to extend, Gokyildiz succeeded Bashir Hayford and returned for a second spell in Ghana, having previously coached King Faisal, AshantiGold and Bechem United.

Gokyildiz endured a slow start, taking just two points from his opening three fixtures, including a goalless draw against newly promoted Swedru All Blacks.

He appeared to have turned a corner in late September, guiding Lions to back-to-back victories - a 2-1 away win at Young Apostles followed by a thrilling 3-2 home victory over AshantiGold.

But October proved brutal. Lions dominated possession but lost 3-1 away to Medeama on 11 October, before suffering a damaging 2-0 home defeat by Berekum Chelsea six days later. The final blow came on 25 October, a 2-1 loss away to Bibiani Gold Stars.

With Lions sliding towards the relegation places and a crucial home fixture against Bechem United coming up on Sunday, the club hierarchy opted to act.

An interim technical team is expected to take charge for that game while the search for a permanent replacement begins.

Gokyildiz's exit means nearly a quarter of the league's 18 clubs have changed managers just two months into the campaign - and three of the four to go are expatriate coaches appointed in the close season.

The full list so far:

Eric Tinkler, Asante Kotoko, Week 4: The first to depart. The South African left by mutual consent on 28 September after a 2-0 home defeat by Aduana FC, before joining South Africa's Durban City.

Predrag Jeredic, Vision FC, Week 7: The Montenegrin left Vision by mutual consent on 20 October after a 1-0 home loss to Hearts of Oak left the Tema-based side in the relegation zone with one win from seven.

Abdul Karim Zito, AshantiGold, Week 8: Sacked on Tuesday along with his entire technical staff despite sitting 11th on 11 points. His final game was a 1-1 home draw with Asante Kotoko in the Ashanti derby.

Kasim Gokyildiz, Heart of Lions, Week 8: The latest casualty after three straight losses leaves Kpando.

The early churn leaves Bibiani Gold Stars' Greek coach Petros Koukouras as the only foreign appointment from the opening weekend still in post.
