Following Ghana's agonizing collapse against Gambia in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers, Black Stars captain Gideon Mensah faced the media to answer for a second-half performance that many fans felt lacked heart, urgency and fight.
But instead of throwing his teammates under the bus after the Ghana vs Gambia defeat, the skipper offered a sobering reality check about the immense, suffocating pressure of wearing the Ghana jersey.
With a historic injury crisis ruling out 24 players for this AFCON 2027 qualifier, the Black Stars were forced to field a heavily rotated squad featuring several debutants. When pressed on why the team seemingly stopped running as Gambia launched their comeback, Gideon admitted that the squad's inexperience showed.
"We had so many newcomers in the team," Gideon explained. "When we talk about newcomers, it has to do with mentality. It has to do with the urgency that they know about playing for Ghana. This is not something that we can switch from this overnight."
The captain emphasized that club football does not prepare a player for the emotional weight of representing a nation that lives and breathes the sport.
"It takes time for new players to learn that playing for Ghana comes with a whole lot. It's not like you're in your club. You're playing for a country where everybody lives off football, everybody's happy when Ghana wins a game. I think this was the part that we were missing in the game."
Despite the tactical breakdown and the painful result in the AFCON 2027 qualifying match against Gambia, Gideon asked the Ghanaian public to show some grace to the players who answered the call during an extreme crisis.
"I'm going to say I'm proud of them for not hiding and then also coming out to play for Ghana," he said. "Nobody was hiding in the game, and everybody showed that it doesn't matter what mistake I'm going to do in the game, I'm still going to show up."
As the Black Stars look ahead to their next fixture in the AFCON qualifiers, the talent on the pitch isn't the primary concern. It's whether this new crop of players can mentally survive the crucible of Ghanaian football.
