The Black Stars' AFCON 2027 qualification campaign hit rock bottom on Tuesday night after a catastrophic defensive collapse saw them throw away a two-goal lead in a devastating defeat to Gambia.
But despite mounting pressure and a shocking run of eight consecutive AFCON qualifying matches without a win, the Ghana head coach flatly refused calls to step down during a tense post-match press conference after the Ghana vs Gambia fixture.
The match started perfectly for the Black Stars, who dominated the early proceedings and surged into a 2-0 lead in this crucial AFCON qualifier. However, the makeshift squad, ravaged by an unprecedented injury crisis that saw 24 potential players unavailable, crumbled under pressure in the second half as Gambia completed a stunning comeback.
When directly asked by a journalist if he would resign to give the frustrated Ghanaian public a gift, the manager was defiant. "The option to resign, it is the most easy solution," he fired back. "If you believe that with a coach resigning you can change the situation of football in Ghana, I'll be the first one to resign. I don't have that belief."
The coach repeatedly pointed to the severe lack of squad continuity and the injury crisis as the root causes of the defensive collapse in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers. Ghana was forced to start the Ghana vs Gambia match with only two fit centre-backs, one of whom fell ill just before kickoff, and several players on the pitch were incapable of lasting the full 90 minutes.
Despite the tactical chaos, the coach fiercely defended his managerial pedigree. "It's not because I lose one game that this make me a loser. Never. I won many, many battles and I still have the record of more wins in international football. But if we have to blame the result, please do it with me. Please leave the players."
With four games left in the AFCON 2027 qualifying cycle and a toxic atmosphere surrounding the team, the Ghana Football Association now faces immense pressure. The manager may refuse to take the easy way out, but the decision may soon be taken out of his hands.
