Former Asante Kotoko coach Eric Tinkler appointed Durban City head coach

Former Asante Kotoko head coach Eric Tinkler has been appointed as the new head coach of Durban City FC.

The South African club announced the appointment on 8 October 2026. Tinkler replaces Khalil Ben Youssef and takes charge as the team prepares to return to domestic action after the FIFA international break.

Tinkler most recently coached Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko, and previously managed Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City and SuperSport United. He won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations with Bafana Bafana as a player.

"I'm excited to be part of what is being built here at Durban City FC," Tinkler said. "The club is very ambitious, they have made positive strides in a short space of time, competing in the CAF Confederation Cup already, and that made my decision easy."

Durban City chairman Farook Kadodia welcomed the appointment, saying Tinkler's experience made him the right choice to lead the club's next chapter.

Tinkler previously worked with Kadodia at Maritzburg United, where he led the club to the 2019 Telkom Knockout Cup final.

"The chairman is someone I've worked with before. When the opportunity presented itself to come back, I grabbed it with both hands," Tinkler added.

He said his immediate focus is to build on last season's foundation.

"I don't want to make massive changes because last season the club was successful. We want to finish in the top eight, go as far as we can in the CAF Confederation Cup, and compete in the Carling Cup and Nedbank Cup."

Tinkler's first game in charge will be a KwaZulu-Natal derby against AmaZulu on 13 October at Chatsworth Stadium.
