FC Samartex 1996 and reigning Ghana Premier League champions Bibiani Gold Stars go head-to-head this afternoon at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena in Samreboi (15:00 GMT kickoff), with four players ruled out through injury and major movement at both ends of the Matchday 9 standings at stake.
Following Saturday's fixtures, fourth-placed Samartex (15 points from eight games) know that a home victory today will lift them to 18 points and send them to the top of the Ghana Premier League table ahead of joint-leaders Medeama SC and Hearts of Oak, who sit on 17 points. Conversely, Gold Stars slipped from 12th to 13th place overnight after Vision FC's ninth outing moved them ahead on goal difference, leaving Petros Koukouras' side eager for an away result to climb out of the bottom six.
Team News and Injury List: Kwame Opoku and Kwaku Owusu Ruled Out
Bibiani Gold Stars have been dealt a triple injury blow ahead of the trip to Samreboi, headed by the absence of striker Kwame Opoku due to a head injury. Opoku scored from the penalty spot in the 25th minute of last Sunday's dramatic 2-1 home win over Heart of Lions, and his absence forces Koukouras to reshuffle his frontline. Midfielder Emmanuel Adjei (thigh knock) and Foster Adjei are also sidelined for the visitors.
For hosts FC Samartex, head coach Nana Kweku Agyemang confirmed that Kwaku Owusu is the only absentee after sustaining an injury during last weekend's 0-0 draw away at Berekum Chelsea.
"Everyone is available for the game with the exception of Kwaku Owusu, who got injured during our game in Berekum," Agyemang confirmed ahead of kickoff.
Koukouras Rejects "Luck" Claims and Promises Attacking Football
Gold Stars enter today's derby having won two of their last three league matches, beating Basake Holy Stars 2-0 and edging Heart of Lions 2-1 at home via a 90+6th-minute own goal from Abdul Jalilu, with a 1-0 away defeat at Debibi United sandwiched in between. Addressing suggestions that his side's recent home victories were fortunate, Koukouras insisted his players are ready to make a statement on the road.
"Preparations have gone very well and we are motivated by the win in our last game," Koukouras said. "We want to prove that the last two results didn't come by luck, so everyone is ready for the game. The 12th position doesn't look good for us, so we will always go into every game to improve."
Despite Gold Stars failing to win any of their last three visits to the Nsenkyire Sports Arena, the Greek tactician ruled out a conservative game plan in Samreboi.
"Our approach is to take the game as normal even though it is a derby. It can only give us three points or we lose three points," Koukouras explained. "It is an away game which demands a different tactical approach, but we are not going to defend. We are going to attack, score more goals, and take all three points."
Nana Agyemang Banks on Samartex's Unbeaten Home Fortress
Standing in Gold Stars' way is a Samartex defense that has conceded just five goals across eight league matches this season, the second-best defensive record in the division behind Hearts of Oak (two). Agyemang, who was named the NASCO Ghana Premier League Coach of the Month for September, has overseen consecutive home wins over Vision FC (2-1) and Young Apostles (1-0) and remains confident his side will extend their unbeaten home record against their regional rivals.
"Preparation is very much okay, and everyone is in high spirits because it is a Western Region derby," Agyemang said. "Though it is a derby, we will make sure we win the game because the Nsenkyire Sports Arena is our fortress."
Head-to-Head Record and Matchday Form Guide
Home advantage has historically dictated the outcome of this fixture. While Gold Stars won the most recent meeting 2-0 in Bibiani on May 6, 2026, Samartex have taken seven points from the last three clashes hosted in Samreboi, recording a 2-0 victory in December 2025, a 1-1 draw in October 2024, and a 1-0 win in June 2024.
