European heavyweights Bayern Munich and Ajax will face off in Nairobi on 5 January 2027 to officially inaugurate Kenya's newly completed flagship arena at Talanta Sports City, labeled inside the bowl as the Raila Odinga International Stadium.
In an official State House Kenya address delivered from the centre of the new pitch, Kenya's President, William Ruto announced that the German and Dutch clubs, who boast a combined 10 European Cup and UEFA Champions League titles between them, will christen the venue in a landmark exhibition fixture.
"Come 5th January 2027, we will open this stadium with a historic match between two giants of European football: FC Bayern Munich of Germany, and AFC Ajax of Amsterdam," the President confirmed during the pitchside broadcast.
"Between them, they have been crowned champions of Europe 10 times."
From March 2024 groundbreaking to Nairobi's new skyline
The announcement marks the culmination of a construction project that began with a formal plaque unveiling in March 2024. Designed as an all-seater football-specific arena without a perimeter athletics track, the venue features red and green tiered seating inside the bowl and an illuminated exterior facade adorned with large Kenyan shield motifs.
"The great citizens of our Republic, look up and look around. This majestic stadium has changed Nairobi's skyline," the President said while standing on the turf.
"Two years ago, I promised the people of Kenya a world-class stadium where the greatest teams in the world would come to play."
A privately backed commercial blueprint
Beyond the headline appeal of hosting two of Europe's most decorated clubs in East Africa, the Kenyan government emphasised that the curtain-raiser will be funded without relying on public coffers, pointing instead to a private-sector blueprint for major sporting events.
"This match will be delivered by corporate partnerships and a self-sustaining commercial model, confirming that world-class sport can attract private investment, earn its own revenue, and create lasting opportunity for our people," the President stated following a nighttime inspection of the stadium concourses, stands, and adjacent training pitches.
Framing the completed complex as a milestone for the country's broader sporting ambitions, he added: "This is more than the opening of a stadium. It is a statement of who we are, and most importantly, who we are becoming. We dream of the very best, and we go get it."
