Ghana Premier League: Asante Kotoko Bounce Back with 1-0 Win Over Karela United After Exit of Eric Tinkler

Asante Kotoko secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Karela United on Matchday 5 of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, steadying the ship following the sudden departure of head coach Eric Tinkler.

The Porcupine Warriors went into Thursday's encounter under intense scrutiny. Just days earlier, South African tactician Eric Tinkler abruptly terminated his contract after only four league games in charge.

During his brief tenure, Tinkler recorded one win, two draws and a 2-0 defeat to Aduana FC. While his exit was officially attributed to personal reasons, the coach later confirmed he had accepted a lucrative offer to return to a club in South Africa's Betway Premiership.

With the technical bench in transition, Director of Football Stanley Purl Menzo took charge of the squad. His leadership paid immediate dividends in front of the home crowd, as the team delivered a resolute and organized performance to claim all three points and calm the anxieties of the fanbase.

Karela United arrived at the Baba Yara Stadium hoping to capitalize on Kotoko's internal disruption, but the home side's defence held firm.

Rebounding from the defensive lapses that cost them against Aduana FC, Kotoko secured a crucial clean sheet.

The win not only restores momentum for Kotoko in the GPL title race but also provides a vital morale boost as the club's board works behind the scenes to appoint a permanent replacement for Tinkler.

Despite the early-season turbulence, the result proves the squad remains competitive and focused on climbing the league table.
