The Taifa Stars are set to use the additional match opportunity after completing their competitive fixtures in the opening round of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The fixture has been made possible by FIFA’s new international match calendar, which comes into effect from 2026. The September-October window has been expanded to 16 days, running from September 21 to October 6, allowing national teams to play up to four matches instead of the usual two.
It gives teams involved in AFCON qualifiers the chance to add high-profile friendlies in the same window.
What we know
Ghana will begin their AFCON qualifying campaign in Group C against rivals Côte d'Ivoire on September 24, before hosting The Gambia on September 29.
Tanzania, meanwhile, have also been drawn in a four-team qualifying group despite having already secured automatic qualification as one of the tournament’s co-hosts.
The Taifa Stars are in Group L alongside Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar. They will host Guinea-Bissau on September 25 before travelling to face Madagascar on September 29.
As co-hosts, Tanzania are guaranteed a place at the 2027 AFCON alongside fellow co-hosts Kenya and Uganda, but will still participate in the qualifying competition, with only one additional team from their group set to join them at the finals.
The proposed Ghana friendly would therefore come after both teams have completed their first two competitive matches of the window.
Ghana are yet to officially confirm the fixture, and it remains unclear whether the Black Stars will arrange another friendly during the extended break.
An 18-year wait
The meeting would renew a fixture that has been absent from the men's international calendar for 18 years.
Ghana and Tanzania last faced each other in a senior men's friendly in August 2008, with the match in Dar es Salaam ending in a 1-1 draw.
For Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz, who continued in the role after guiding Ghana to the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup, the game would provide an additional opportunity to assess his squad depth after the AFCON qualifiers.
For Tanzania head coach Miguel Angel Gamondi, it offers a chance to test his side against one of Africa’s heavyweights as preparations continue for a home AFCON.
