The dissolution was announced by the Presidency on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, as part of a wider shake-up affecting boards of several state institutions.
The sacked NSA board was chaired by Dr Fred Awaah and included NSA Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, National Sports College representative Fuseini Bawa, Samuel Duku Sarfo of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, Nana Adwoa Owusu-Amoh of the Ministry of Finance and Is-Haku Al-Hassan of the Ministry of Education.
Other members were Col. Richard Kofi Akoto of the Security Services Sports Association, Dr Luguterah Austin Wontepaga representing tertiary institutions, Samson Deen of the National Paralympic Committee, Ghana Olympic Committee President Richard Kofi Akpokavie, Hajia Sulemana Zenabu, Alhaji Idrisu Muntawalkilu Ahmed, Prof. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, Theresa Osahene and Hamilton Kweku Nixon.
The board was sworn into office on December 15, 2025, by Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams under Section 4 of the Sports Act, 2016 (Act 934), with a mandate to provide oversight for the Authority and drive reforms across Ghana sports.
During its brief spell, the Awaah-led board outlined plans to reposition sports as an economic sector and explored new investment models including mobile sporting infrastructure. It also moved to reduce the NSA's reliance on government funding by establishing a five-member Resource Mobilisation and Partnership Committee in August, chaired by Samson Deen.
Just days before the dissolution, Dr Awaah had raised alarm over the deteriorating condition of the Accra Sports Stadium, describing it as a potential safety hazard after a joint inspection by the NSA and government officials.
The Presidency has directed the Minister for Sports and Recreation to take steps to enforce the directive, with a new board to be reconstituted in due course.
Until then, management of the NSA will handle day-to-day operations, but major policy, financial and contractual decisions will require clearance from the Ministry.
Other institutions affected by the directive include Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited, BOST, VALCO, Consolidated Bank Ghana, Ghana Post, Road Maintenance Trust Fund, TDC Ghana Limited and GNPC.
