Accra Hearts of Oak made the perfect start to the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season with a dominant 4-0 victory over Berekum Chelsea at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Legon.
The Phobians, who finished last season with 25 goals scored and just 15 conceded, showed both attacking intent and control to brush aside the Blues.
John Antwi Leads Hearts of Oak Attack on Debut
The story of the first half was John Antwi. The former Al Ahly, Dreams FC and Pyramids striker, who switched from Dreams FC to Hearts of Oak this season, marked his debut for the Phobians with a clinical brace. The veteran forward opened the scoring after just five minutes before doubling the lead in the 37th minute to give Hearts of Oak a 2-0 advantage at the break.
Hearts of Oak could have scored more. In the 21st minute, Raphael Amponsah saw his powerful strike from outside the 18-yard box brilliantly saved by Berekum Chelsea goalkeeper Eric Ofori Antwi.
Hearts of Oak Seal Win Late at Legon
Berekum Chelsea struggled to create clear chances, and Hearts of Oak's dominance showed in the stats. The home side recorded 11 shots with 6 on target compared to Berekum Chelsea's 6 shots with 1 on target, while edging possession 53% to 47%.
Accra Hearts of Oak sealed all three points late on. Kader Mamadu made it 3-0 in the 88th minute before Ali Mohammed converted a penalty in the 90th +2 minute to make it 4-0.
The result sends an early message from Hearts of Oak in the Ghana Premier League title race, while Berekum Chelsea will look to bounce back on Matchday 2.
Accra Hearts of Oak will now travel to Bibiani to face Bibiani GoldStars on Matchday 2 of the Ghana Premier League.
