Frank Lampard turned to former Chelsea team-mate Michael Essien to help land the £23m Right to Dream graduate from Nordsjælland, as newly promoted Coventry break their transfer record for a fourth time this summer.
Coventry City have completed the signing of Ghana international Caleb Yirenkyi from FC Nordsjælland, making the 20-year-old midfielder the club's record buy as they prepare for their first Premier League campaign in 25 years.
Yirenkyi has signed a long-term contract after Coventry agreed an initial fee of €27m (£23m), which could rise to €30m (£25.7m) with performance-related add-ons.
"I want to give my best to the team each and every day," Yirenkyi said after the move was confirmed.
Fourth record of the summer for Coventry
The deal is Coventry's fourth club-record signing of the transfer window, following the £22.5m capture of goalkeeper Carl Rushworth from Brighton and the earlier additions of Loum Tchaouna and Aurele Amenda. Including add-ons, the club's outlay across those four deals could approach £90m.
It is a landmark sale for Nordsjælland too. The fee is reported to surpass the Danish transfer record the club set in 2023 by selling fellow Ghanaian Ernest Nuamah, who went on to join Lyon — meaning Yirenkyi becomes the most expensive player in Scandinavian football history.
The Essien factor
Lampard is understood to have consulted Michael Essien, his former Chelsea team-mate of nine years, before finalising the deal. Essien has been Nordsjælland's assistant coach since 2020 and has worked closely with Yirenkyi throughout his rise through the club, with the pair often compared for their similar styles in midfield.
Yirenkyi has previously credited Essien's influence on his game: "He is very important to us. We learn a lot from him."
From Right to Dream to the World Cup
A graduate of Ghana's Right to Dream Academy, Yirenkyi joined Nordsjælland's first-team squad in 2024 and quickly became one of the Danish Superliga's most sought-after young midfielders. He was named the division's Young Player of the Year for 2025/26 after helping Nordsjælland finish third and qualify for the UEFA Conference League.
He made his senior Ghana debut in last year's Unity Cup match against Nigeria, then announced himself on the world stage at this summer's World Cup, scoring a stoppage-time winner against Panama in the group stage to become the second-youngest player to score for Ghana at a World Cup, behind Haminu Draman.
Yirenkyi will now look to carry that form into English football as Coventry aim to establish themselves back in the top flight.
