Asante Kotoko claimed the Democracy Cup with a 4-1 penalty shootout victory over rivals Hearts of Oak after a goalless draw in Kumasi.
The Porcupine Warriors maintained their perfect record against Hearts in Friday finals in a tense, hard-fought contest at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, performed the ceremonial kick-off for the second edition of the Democracy Cup, which was introduced to celebrate Ghana's parliamentary democracy.
Kotoko made a blistering start, winning three corners inside the opening two minutes and pinning Hearts deep in their own half.
Their early pressure almost paid off in the 18th minute when a header beat goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
Hearts improved after the break and were indebted to Asare, who produced two outstanding saves to deny Kotoko and force the tie to penalties.
The shootout belonged to Kotoko goalkeeper Ibrahim Danlad. The former Ghana U20 captain saved two penalties, denying Kelvin Osei Asibey and Amankwah Baafi, while Kotoko converted all four of their spot-kicks to seal a 4-1 win and lift the trophy.
The result extends Kotoko's dominance in this fixture when played on a Friday and gives them bragging rights heading into the new Ghana Premier League season.
