​In what could prove to be one of the shrewdest pieces of business ahead of the 2026/27 Championship campaign, Queens Park Rangers have secured the signature of the explosive 25-year-old right-back on a permanent free transfer.

​Born just down the road in Hillingdon, the move represents a true homecoming for the dynamic defender, who arrives at Loftus Road following the mutual termination of his contract with Serie A side Fiorentina.

​Lamptey’s Italian adventure was tragically cut short. Just 12 months into a four-year deal, he suffered a devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during a clash against Como on September 21, 2025. The severe setback sidelined him for the remainder of the season and ultimately led to his early departure from Florence.

​The injury took a heavy toll on his international aspirations as well. The 11-cap Black Star was forced to watch from the sidelines as Ghana navigated the 2025 AFCON and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, missing out on crucial tournament action and qualifiers.

​But after a grueling year of rehabilitation, the resilient full-back is nearing full fitness and is expected to be available for selection by September.

​"My recovery has gone well and I am not too far away now," Lamptey said, reflecting on his arduous journey. "Throughout my football journey, I have always been resilient. You cannot really predict what is going to happen, but you can only put your best foot forward and prepare as well as possible."

​Despite fielding a myriad of offers from rival EFL Championship teams and clubs abroad, it was a compelling pitch from QPR CEO Christian Nourry and head coach Julien Stéphan that lured Lamptey back to the capital.

​The defender was quick to praise his new manager. "His resume speaks for itself," Lamptey noted. "He has worked with some great players who have gone on to do great things in the game. He is a great coach, so I am excited to work with him and learn from him."

​For QPR's hierarchy, the acquisition is a massive statement of intent. CEO Christian Nourry echoed the excitement around Loftus Road, stating: "With over 100 Premier League appearances to his name at 25, there is no doubting his talent. At QPR, Lamptey will find a familiar face in fellow Ghanaian international Kwame Poku, who joined the Rs last summer. The transfer makes Lamptey the fourth Ghanaian to don the famous blue and white hoops. He follows in the footsteps of powerful striker Patrick Agyemang, who helped QPR lift the Championship title in 2011, and veteran winger Albert Adomah, who lived out his boyhood dream at the club between 2020 and 2024.

​Lamptey brings extensive top-flight pedigree to the Championship. Having emerged through the youth ranks at Chelsea—where he made his Premier League debut in 2019—he went on to make over 120 appearances for Brighton & Hove Albion, establishing himself as one of England's most exciting young full-backs.

I am tough-tackling, I love one-v-ones, defensive and attacking. I just love playing the game."
