The Black Stars managed to walk away with a crucial point after a 0-0 draw against England in Boston, with Hearts of Oak's Benjamin Asare pulling off a massive save to deny Bukayo Saka and keep Ghana's progression to the Round of 32 alive.
Before the clash, the odds were heavily stacked against the four-time AFCON champions. The Opta Supercomputer had predicted a 78.8% probability of a win for the Three Lions, with bookmakers assigning massive odds to a Ghanaian victory.
However, at the end of the ninety minutes, the result was far from what the pundits expected. The stalemate was born out of a fascinating tactical battle. Through shrewd substitutions and excellent game management, both teams showcased their technical abilities, delivering a masterclass in modern football game plans.
Ghana and England are now leveled on four points each at the end of their second round of Group L fixtures. The Black Stars will play Croatia, while England faces Panama on Friday, June 27, in the final group stage matches.
England, who are characteristically forward-looking, aggressive, and disruptive under Thomas Tuchel, simply could not frustrate Ghana. They were limited to just three shots on target and failed to capitalize on their corner kick opportunities.
Conversely, under Carlos Queiroz, the Black Stars have forged a distinct identity. They look conservative, resilient, and highly organized at the back, perfectly suited for counter-attacking football. In Queiroz's short tenure, the team has already managed two clean sheets in three games.
The undisputed anchor of those clean sheets is Benjamin Asare. As the record-holding, first active Ghana Premier League goalkeeper to guard the net for the national team on football's biggest stage, he continues to impress. Featuring in his second consecutive World Cup match, Asare consistently delivered top-tier saves exactly when his country needed them most.
