Hearts of Oak shot-stopper Benjamin Asare has made history, becoming the first Ghana Premier League (GPL) goalkeeper to play a match at the FIFA World Cup, the world's biggest footballing stage.
Since 2006, Ghana has called up six GPL goalkeepers for their World Cup campaigns, but until now, none had been trusted to take the gloves for the Black Stars—not even for half an hour. George Owu, Daniel Agyei, Stephen Ahorlu, Stephen Adams, and Danlad Ibrahim were all recruited from the domestic league, yet Asare is the first to finally break the cycle.
Asare made his historic debut on June 17, 2026, against Panama, helping secure a crucial 1-0 victory for Ghana. The dramatic win was sealed deep into stoppage time (90+5') by a stunning goal from talented wonderkid Caleb Yirenkyi. The victory sees the Black Stars level on points with group heavyweights England, placing them firmly in second position.
However, Asare's milestone appearance was born out of unforeseen circumstances. First-choice keeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi took a heavy knock from an opposing player during the first half. Despite putting on an impressive performance with several spectacular saves to keep the Black Stars in the game, Ati-Zigi looked visibly uncomfortable and ultimately had to be replaced by the Hearts of Oak star. The severity of Ati-Zigi's injury is not yet confirmed, and the team remains hopeful it is a minor issue.
Benjamin Asare has now featured for the Black Stars 13 times, boasting a solid record of 6 clean sheets while conceding 12 goals. This opening victory will undoubtedly motivate the squad and coaching staff as Ghana prepares for a tough second-round Group L clash against Croatia.
Should Ati-Zigi remain sidelined, fans and well-wishers will be eager to see Asare make it two consecutive World Cup appearances and continue to make the domestic league proud.
